New icebreaking agreement strengthens cooperation
Winter is approaching the North, and icebreakers are gradually moving into icebreaking readiness. This winter, operations will be guided by a new icebreaking service agreement that Arctia has concluded with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency is responsible for the governmental and commissioning tasks related to winter navigation assistance, as well as national coordination, development, and oversight, while Arctia provides the service with its eight icebreakers.
The new icebreaking agreement introduces a more cost-effective operating model. The service provider now has more opportunities to influence operational decisions, such as the departure order of icebreakers. This enables more efficient responses to varying ice conditions and improves the performance of winter navigation.
“Our goal is closer cooperation and open dialogue. When decision-making and the responsibilities are clear, we as service provider can fully utilize our expertise and further develop our cooperation,” says Paavo Kojonen, Business Director of Icebreaking.
In addition to close cooperation, the new agreement emphasizes joint development and continuous improvement. Its objective is to combine the strengths of both parties—authorities’ strategic and comprehensive oversight of the winter navigation system, and the service provider’s practical expertise—into a more efficient and flexible operating model.
“Our shared goal is to ensure that maritime transport, an essential part of national security of supply, runs safely and cost-effectively throughout the winter season. The new agreements provide a strong foundation for long-term partnership and continuous development,” says Helena Orädd, Head of the Maritime Unit at the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.
